Real-Time Run-of-River Hydropower Operations

Main content

Wind and solar power generation are variable, and these variations in renewable generation are unpredictable. Balancing a power system with large penetrations of renewables requires resources that can ramp quickly and store energy. One such resource is conventional hydropower plants. However, there is little research on the benefits of doing optimization and/or hydro-wind coordination in real-time operations.

Project Goals

  • Developed a real-time control scheme for a hydropower cascade
  • Analyze hydropower system performance when it is used to balance wind variability
  • Evaluate how hydropower plants can be operated for flexibility instead of capacity
  • Assess how performance changes when operations are centralized or decentralized
