Consumer-centric Privacy in Smart Energy Grids (COPES)

Main content

Motivation:

Privacy risks stemming from high-frequency smart metering

  • Smart Meters capable of measuring and recording data at high time resolution and granularity
  • Such data improves reliability and efficiency of grid operations, supporting the integration of variable renewable generation
  • Communication of the data poses privacy risks – possible to derive detailed consumer behavior

Project Goals:

  • Develop new technologies to protect consumer privacy whilst preserving the advanced control and monitoring functionalities of smart grids
  • Develop a new approach to alter time - physical energy flow profiles, striking a balance between consumer privacy and grid efficiency and stability
  • Achieve privacy-by-design grid control and state estimation solutions
